Consumer Protection (Northern Ireland) Order 1987

Under Part II, civil liability – referred to as product liability – is imposed on the manufacturer or importer of a defective product which causes loss or damage. A defective product is one that does not reach the standard of safety you are generally entitled to expect. You can claim compensation if the defective product causes death or personal injury. You can also claim for loss or damage to personal property exceeding £275. You do not have to prove that the manufacturer or importer was negligent or at fault. You can not claim for any damage done to the defective product itself.
