Flights Cancelled Due To Volcanic Ash – Information For Passengers – 15/04/2010

The Consumer Council is encouraging passengers to contact their airline or airport for information about how their flight has been affected by the volcanic ash cloud today. However, it has also encouraged passengers who are having problems getting information to visit its website www.consumercouncil.org.uk, facebook (Consumer Council Northern Ireland), twitter (@ConsumerCouncil) or call the Consumer Council on 0800 121 6022 for information about their rights.

Andy McClenaghan from the Consumer Council said: “Clearly safety is the top priority for passengers, however this situation will be frustrating and upsetting. We are advising passengers in the first instance to contact their airline or airport for advice about their flight before they travel to the airport. The Consumer Council also wants to make sure passengers know their rights in circumstances like these, so we have placed information on our website, including the full list of airlines operating in and out of Northern Ireland and their contact details. Alternatively passengers can call us on 0800 121 6022 for the information.

“When flights are cancelled due to circumstances beyond the airlines’ or airports’ control, passengers will not be entitled to compensation. However, the airline should offer alternative travel arrangements at the earliest opportunity or a full refund if passengers decide not to travel.  Passengers are also entitled to assistance in terms of overnight accommodation if needed as well as meals and refreshments.  In addition, passengers should be offered two free telephone calls, or e-mails.

“Passengers should also contact their insurance company to check how they are covered in the event of flight cancellations and delays.  If you have booked through a travel agent or tour operator, you should contact them directly in the first instance,“ said Andy.
