Most bettors don't lose because they're unlucky. They lose because they repeat the same avoidable mistakes. This checklist is your pre-flight routine for online casino and sports betting. Run through it before you place a single wager.

Step 1: Set Your Bankroll Before You Log In

Never deposit on impulse. Decide your total gambling budget for the month — money you can afford to lose — and stick to it.

• Avoid: Using rent, savings, or credit for deposits.
• Do: Split your bankroll into weekly or daily limits. When it's gone, you're done.

Step 2: Read the Bonus Terms (Not Just the Headline)

Welcome bonuses are marketing. The real cost hides in the fine print.

What to check every time:

• Wagering requirements (30x? 50x? Higher = worse).
• Game weighting — slots often count 100%, table games sometimes 10% or less.
• Maximum bet while clearing the bonus (usually $5 or less).
• Time limits — 7 days? 30 days? Miss it and you lose everything.

Avoid: Chasing bonuses you can't realistically clear. A $500 bonus with 50x wagering means $25,000 in bets.

Step 3: Never Chase Losses — Especially Live

Live betting and live dealer games are designed to keep you in the moment. That's when bad decisions happen.

• Avoid: Doubling your stake after a loss to 'win it back.'
• Avoid: Betting on a game you know nothing about just because it's live.
• Do: Set a stop-loss. If you hit it, close the tab. No exceptions.

Step 4: Ignore 'Guaranteed' Systems and Tipsters

No system beats the house edge long-term. No tipster has a crystal ball.

• Avoid: Paid Telegram groups, 'VIP' signals, or martingale strategies.
• Do: Treat betting as entertainment, not income. If it were predictable, sportsbooks wouldn't exist.

Step 5: Check the License and Payout Speed

Not all online casinos and sportsbooks are equal. Some are legit. Some vanish with your balance.

• Do: Verify a valid license (UKGC, MGA, Curacao, etc.) on the site footer.
• Do: Search for payout complaints before depositing. Slow withdrawals = red flag.
• Avoid: Sites with no contact info, no terms, or 'too good to be true' offers.

Step 6: Don't Bet on Every Game

Action junkies lose more. Period.

• Avoid: Parlaying 10 legs for a lottery ticket payout.
• Avoid: Betting on your favorite team every week out of loyalty.
• Do: Pick 1–3 high-conviction bets per week. Quality over quantity.

Step 7: Use Limits and Self-Exclusion Tools

Every regulated iGaming site offers deposit limits, loss limits, session timers, and self-exclusion. Use them before you need them.

• Do: Set a weekly deposit limit on day one.
• Do: Enable reality checks if you play casino games for hours.
• Avoid: Removing limits when you're tilted. Most sites enforce a 24-hour cool-off for increases.

Step 8: Track Every Bet (Yes, Every Single One)

You can't manage what you don't measure. A simple spreadsheet works.

• Date, sport/game, stake, odds, result, mood.
• After 30 days, review. Most people are shocked by the patterns.
• Avoid: Relying on memory. The brain remembers wins, forgets losses.

Step 9: Know When to Walk Away — For Good

If betting stops being fun, it's already a problem. Warning signs:

• Lying about your gambling.
• Betting to escape stress or boredom.
• Chasing losses with money you need.
• Feeling anxious or irritable when not betting.

Use self-exclusion via the site or software like Gamban. It's not weakness — it's strategy.

Step 10: Treat iGaming Like a Subscription, Not a Slot Machine

The smartest bettors set a monthly 'entertainment fee' — say $50 — and treat it like a Netflix bill. When it's spent, that's it. No reloads. No 'one more deposit.'

Run this checklist every time you log in. The house always has an edge. Your job is to keep it small, keep control, and keep it fun. pg88.
